Original Medicare Premiums
Medicare is made up of different parts, each covering specific types of care. Parts A and B together are known as Original Medicare and form the foundation of your coverage.
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Part A helps cover inpatient care, including:
-
Hospital stays
-
Skilled nursing facility care
-
Hospice care
-
Some home health services
Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Part B covers outpatient and medical services, including:
-
Doctor visits
-
Preventive services
-
Lab work and diagnostic testing
-
Durable medical equipment
-
Outpatient procedures
Part B usually requires a monthly premium, which is based on your income.
Understanding Part B Costs
The standard Part B premium is set each year, but higher-income individuals may pay more due to Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA).

How Parts A & B Work Together
Together, Parts A and B provide broad coverage for hospital and medical services. However, they do not cover everything—such as prescription drugs, dental, vision, or hearing.
Many people choose to add additional coverage, such as:
-
A Medicare Advantage plan (Part C)
-
A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan
-
A Part D prescription drug plan
